Book picture HTML 4 for the World Wide Web, Fourth Edition:
Visual QuickStart Guide.
Review by : Mark Wilson
Book Level : Beginning/Intermediate
Cost : $17.95 (about £14.99)
Title : HTML 4 For the World Wide Web
ISBN : 0-201-69696-7 - updated edition ISBN 0-201-35493-4
Publisher : Peachpit Press http://www.peachpit.com

This book is superb, and well worth the small cost of buying it. When ever I've been stuck with a html problem I've reached for this book. The author Elizabeth Castro has a very good understanding of html, and displays a very good relationship with the reader

You don't find this book hard to read like some html reference manuals. It has plenty of info to keep you interested and focused. It has coverage of CSS at level 2, Frames, tables, Forms, and lists all html 4 tags, it goes in to quite some detail.

To sum up, It takes a very easy visual approach to teaching html, with pictures and guides to help to show you what to do.

Oddly even though Its not really a reference library of html commands it works like one really well, with clear and well planned indexes.

And best of all it also has a web site to go with the book http://peachpit.com/vqs/html4/ With all the examples from the book, Q and A forums, and updates.

So, What do I give this book, a stonking 10 out of 10.

book cover Designing With Javascript
(creating Dynamic web pages)
Review by : Mark Wilson
Book Level : (unavailable)
Cost : $29.99 (about £18.99)
Title : Designing With Javascript (creating Dynamic web pages)
ISBN : 1-56592-300-6
Publisher : O'Reilly. http://www.oreilly.com
Author : Nick Heinle

I found this book to be a bit of a let down in some respects, for example the included JavaScript cd soouce code actually crashed IE/NS on a number of occasions (which I found surprising). It only deals with Javascript 1.2 (So I guess its quite out of date by now)

Its good, but not good enough, though the web support site is superb, http://www.webcoder.com - well worth checking out

The only problem with using this book and its example code is the state of JavaScript in Amiga browsers, I did try some of the JS on Voyager and some worked some didnt, I feel that it will be a hit and miss affair for a while to come (maybe I should try it with Aweb).

I'd give this book a 6 out of 10, (I would of liked to have taken marks off for the cover ;)

This book covers all html 4 tags and the features that go with it, Has lots of detailed information on Dynamic html for NS, and IE.

It goes into detail on how to include video, sound, into your website, It also tells you how to create image maps.

It also has in-depth information on XML, CSS, Java, JavaScript, VBscript, and Webcasting.

This book is not for a novice, you need to have a good understanding of html or you'll find this very very hard going. I quite like it for the amount of detail in the book. It has expert tips, and advice, you'll soon pick up all the gubbings about html 4 and what it has to offer you as a web designer.

I'd give it a 9 out of 10 for content and information.

Down points is the price, but I got mine for £15.99 from a discount book store so it pays to shop around.
